Make some room there, Hester Prynne! One of the other discoveries I made while doing family research was that another Puritan
ancestor, Robert Coles, was sentenced to wear a
scarlet letter for public insobriety in 1633 Massachusetts:

For those struggling to remember what they read back in high school, here's the plot of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel The Scarlet Letter, per Wikipedia: "Set in 17th-century Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony, during the years 1642 to 1649, it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity."

Not explicit in the above summary is that Hester is made to wear a red letter A, which presumably represents the word adulterer, on her own "outward garment," identifying herself as a sinner to anyone she meets, prolonging her public shame. The father of her child, whose identity she refuses to expose, suffers overwhelming guilt as Hester pays for the sin they both committed. That much having been said, I'm an English professor so I choose to stop here; if you want to know how the story turns out, you'll have to read Hawthorne's master work for yourself. I don't advise taking the easy way around and watching the 1995 movie, as that version takes liberties, adding story elements not present in the novel. (From what I've heard, the book is a better time anyway).
But back now to my ancestor, Robert Coles. A couple of thoughts about his situation and sentencing occur.

First, it's a safe assumption that the D stands for drunkard, so I'm sure he was not happy about having to wear this for a full year "and not to leave it off at any tyme" lest he pay up for going around without it, although who knows--perhaps he felt lucky to escape the stocks (see right). The Puritans were a serious bunch, with their witch trials, hangings as public entertainment, and banishments to the wilderness for crimes such as smiling in church (a story I'll save for my next post). Having to wear a scarlet letter may have been preferable.

Second, I'm interested in how public shaming is still "a thing" 385 years later, albeit in updated venues such as social media (which is a sort of global town square, when one thinks about it). I'd guess that its perseverance attests to its effectiveness in controlling aberrant behavior... and yet there are so many who still refuse to be embarrassed and controlled. (You can fill in the "so many" blanks there as you see fit.)

Finally, I wonder what life is like after one stops wearing a scarlet letter. Did the Puritans have a "he did his time, paid his debt to society" attitude and forget easily, or did that letter remain, invisible yet fixed, after it was physically removed from the outer garment? If anyone knows, I'd be happy to hear about it in the comments below.

In case you have something else to say, please note well: All of my above musings are intentionally flippant. If you're the humorless historian type, please save us both the time and displeasure of sanctimonious commentary that I'd just roll my eyes at before deleting rather than posting (yes, comment moderation is enabled). Thanks in advance for your cooperation there.

Next time I post--which I sincerely hope will be during this decade--I'll talk about another surprising ancestor: a Puritan who was whipped for speaking truth to power and shipped back to England, only to return later with some serious attitude. Stay tuned.Kathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06948479284201815601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-108236099530321868.post-28109178970630053712016-11-16T08:15:00.000-05:002016-11-16T08:15:07.445-05:00Fun with DNAThere's a decidedly scripted feel to this, which people attacked in YouTube's comments section, yet the sense of wonder felt upon discovering what one really is versus what one thought they were based on family lore is genuine. I haven't wrote about the results of my own autosomal DNA results as of yet, but I will... someday.
one of the very best web sites for genealogical research nowadays, having much
improved its offerings from the questionable member-submitted information and
unconfirmed family trees of old to the free-to-download scans of actual vital
records that can be found there today. Did you know, however, that there’s a
way to search specific state records rather than slog through all of the

requiring you to either filter results (which may work) or click through a
bunch of pages that have no value to you at all. If you know where y our
ancestor lived, searching by location yields far more relevant results.

find it. The other databases with large numbers in the same column, however, hold
records that are already indexed, so you can click into the database and plug
in your ancestor's information. Those records, if any, should pop right up.

This book is excellent for members of lineage groups in particular, as it describes methods I've used for years to promote my own DAR chapter, which had 52 members when I first joined and now has close to 100 members due to our group's publicity efforts.

Thanks for entering, and good luck!

About four months ago, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by
Merle English, Newsday writer/reporter,
about my election as President of Kady Brownell Tent #36, Daughters of UnionVeterans of the Civil War, 1861-1865. In addition to my membership and
publicity initiatives, we spoke about my Civil War ancestor and several other
people I discovered hiding up there in the branches of my family tree,
including the most infamous ancestor I have: Rebecca Elsing Mudge Greensmith.

Rebecca,
whose maiden name is unknown (all three surnames are from her three marriages),
was executed alongside her third husband, Nathaniel Greensmith, for the crime
of witchcraft in January 1662/3, and her damning confession invites all sorts of speculation
as to why a woman would destroy herself so utterly before execution (my personal
theory: she was forced to do so). The article "Family Ties to History: How Lineage Groups Make the Past Personal" ran in Newsday’s Long Island section on March 15th, 2015,
and includes quotes from my husband and my friend Betsey about the
genealogical societies to which they belong.

I’m so
grateful to Merle and to Newsday for publicizing Kady Brownell Tent #36 and the
rather excellent hobby of genealogical research. The only problem is
this: Kady Brownell Tent #36 has a Facebook page, but it still doesn’t have
its own web site. I’m developing one; it’s completed but must
go two approval processes (at the state and national levels of DUVCW) before it
“goes live.” So, I wanted to post some information here for prospective members
regarding how to contact the tent, in case they’re ready right now and would rather
not wait for a web site to provide instructions.

What a difference a month makes.
The last time I posted here, I was struggling with the prospect of writing a
bad review. Now here I am, about to give one.

As a historical fiction writer and
a college professor who has slogged through the archives of Long
Island's Revolutionary War history for personal and professional
reasons, I had the highest hopes for AMC's Turn.
For too long, Long Island's history of British Occupation and the covert role
that Long Islanders played in helping our young country win the war has been
side-stepped by American history textbooks and teachers alike. Turn, I believed, would begin to educate
the public about what really happened on Long Island
during the American Revolution. Or so I'd hoped.

In the first episode of Turn,
Abraham
Woodhull is "turned" by childhood friend Benjamin Tallmadge against the
loyalist leanings of his family and the greater Setauket community. He
secretly pines for Anna Smith Strong, his ex-fiancé, who runs Strong
Tavern
in her arrested husband's absence (Selah Strong has been incarcerated
for accidentally
assaulting a British officer during a tavern brawl, leaving Anna to fend
for herself), and Woodhull convinces her to pitch in by hanging her
black petticoat on her clothesline as a signal when he has intelligence
to share. Woodhull then takes an oath of
loyalty to the crown in a Setauket public square to solidify his cover
before getting down to the business of surreptitiously <span style="font-family: "times new roman"; font-size: 12pt;">changing
young America's fortune in
the War for American Independence.

This all sounds exciting and
fantastic. What it lacks is historical accuracy. First of all, Abraham Woodhull was not a Tory. He served on the
Committee of Public Safety in Brookhaven
Town, he was a lieutenant
in the local militia, and he signed an oath of loyalty to support the
Continental Congress prior to the occupation. When Tallmadge suggested spying for the cause,
Woodhull would have had no problem with the request. In fact, it might even have
been Woodhull's idea.

Second, Woodhull was 26 in 1776
and was single for the first five years of the war; he didn't marry Mary Smith
until 1781*, a time at which the British were beginning to redirect Long
Island-based troops to support to their flailing South Carolina campaign. Abraham and Mary
never had a son named Thomas, nor did Abraham have a predeceased brother by
that name who was held up as a shining example of who Abraham should be in order to please his
demanding father Richard.

This romance never happened.

Third, no engagement to Anna
Smith Strong ever existed, and no arranged marriage brokered by Woodhull's
father and Obadiah Smith ever thwarted his intentions to marry her. Anna (Nancy)
Smith married Selah Strong in 1760, when Woodhull was just ten years old, and she birthed her first child in 1761. By age 36
in 1776, she was pregnant with her seventh child, a boy born in December of
that year. Despite this large brood, "Annie" is portrayed as childless in Turn; the Strong children have been written out to smooth the way
for the imaginary romance. Yes, Selah Strong was arrested and sent to the
notorious prison ship Jersey, but for the crime of espionage. Strong didn't even own a tavern in Setauket; he was a farmer. The real Setauket tavern
owner in the spy ring was Captain Austin Roe, a patriot who for whatever reason
has yet to make an appearance in the series.

In summary, a sizeable chunk of
this true story has been completely fabricated.

My problem with Turn stems from this belief: Historical
fiction has an obligation at least to try
to get the facts right, and especially so when using the names of real historical
figures. Consider HBO's excellent John Adams series, based on David McCullough's masterful book. The scriptwriters
didn't have John Adams lusting after another woman, nor did they feign his
ideology or write in/out family members to match an altered story line. In John Adams, the historical record
remains largely intact. Imagined scenes, such as the conversation John holds
with cousin Sam Adams prior to a public tarring-and-feathering, are present
solely to develop characters further. There's no need to "sex up"
John Adams' story by adding fictional elements. It's "sexy" enough as
is.

The same truth holds for Long Island's history. After the American loss at the
Battle of Long Island, British soldiers subjected the island's inhabitants to
numerous documented abuses. Twenty two thousand British soldiers and Hessian
mercenaries were stationed there, matching the adult population in number. Martial
law was imposed. Ports were closed, and travel off Long
Island became impossible without British permission. Beatings,
robberies, rapes, murders and other crimes were committed by the British with
impunity. Although the island became a safe haven for Tory refugees, loyalists living
there still carried "papers of protection" in case they got into a
scrape with the soldiery. One can easily reason that it was a desperate time
for residents of colonial Long Island.

Yet these remarkable circumstances
somehow failed to create a compelling enough backdrop for Turn. Illicit romance and exaggerated loyalist sympathies are
introduced to make Abraham Woodhull not only a spy, but a married man living on
the edge, torn between his "true love" and his wife, always in danger
of being caught by a Tory neighbor. Apparently, the potential threat of torture
and execution upon discovery of his spy work wasn't considered enough to
keep the viewing public intrigued. The story needed additional fictional
elements to be made more appealing.

In 1986, Alan Alda starred in Sweet Liberty, a movie about a history
professor who watches in horror as the movie adaptation of his ancestor's
Revolutionary War diary deviates from the original true story to a fictional one of
illicit romance between his ancestor and a British officer. In the film, changes
are justified by movie-makers as a way to make history "more
interesting" for young people. The parallel between the plot of Sweet Liberty and what's happened in Turn causes more than a little déjà vu. [Watch the trailer here.]

Turn also engages in what I call McHistory--that is, the
oversimplification of complex historical situations so as to avoid any
bothersome critical thinking. The scholar-debunked idea that Long Island was
"mostly Tory" persists in character dialogue; the first episode emphasizes
in an almost cartoonish way that Whigs will find "no friends in New York." Richard
Woodhull, a judge, is portrayed as a staunch loyalist. Never mind that
this is the same man whose father's and grandfather's graves were
"desecrated" by British soldiers**--an act that Turn portrays as orchestrated
by said Woodhull on British behalf. Young Abraham "turning" against the
imagined Tory ideology of his community is far more dramatic than the reality:
The island contained a minority of die-hard loyalists in 1776 and was rabidly
patriotic by the end of the British occupation--a fact supported by the island-wide
"Tory purge" of 1783 in which loyalists were forced to flee by ship
to Nova Scotia immediately following the signing of the Treaty of Paris.

All of this goes to show that one
can't get his/her history from a television show. Despite the televised endorsements
of historical societies and "historians," Turn is not the true story of Long Island's
first spy ring. It's Long Island's very own
version of Sweet Liberty, brought to
life by attractive and talented actors (the only reason to watch) who likely have no idea that the
"history" they're portraying is more creative license than fact, the
product of a scriptwriting arrogance that oversimplifies and "improves"
real history for entertainment purposes.

I just hope that the people who
brought John Adams to life for HBO
will get around to making a true version of the Culper Spy Ring story someday. That
would be worth watching.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.
I found a Facebook contest run by Gaelsong, which asked entrants to write a 500-word maximum flash fiction piece based on the following photograph...
Some interesting facts about the names in the tale: Adaryn means "bird," Aveline means "little bird" and Turlough means "one who aids or rescues." All of these meanings are significant.
Feel free to post comments here or beneath the story on the story page. I love hearing from readers and answering questions, if there are any.
Voting takes place until Halloween. Thanks in advance for your vote!
American author and humorist Mark Twain (a.k.a. Samuel Langhorne Clemens) is credited with once having said, "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated." So it would also seem to be with redheads, who "scientists" say will go the way of the dodo bird and the dinosaur before the end of the 21st Century.

This article from HowStuffWorks explains how the rumor began around 2005 and has spread despite the fact that a gene mutation like the one that causes red hair cannot "die out." Red hair will undoubtedly become more rare as time marches onward, but no--it isn't going anywhere, folks.
Does DNA give us much more than we originally thought?

Have you ever looked up certain branches of you family tree and noticed a trend or a pattern of behavior present across three or more generations? Epigenetics just might explain all that.

I have often wondered how it came to be that four generations of men in a certain branch of my family tree (possibly more--I still have a brick wall there to break down) have all had a wanderlust that drove them far from home, by land and by sea, even though circumstances separate these men in ways that make the much more simple idea that this was learned behavior highly unlikely.

Epigenetics--the idea that a grandparents' life experiences can shape who you are--may indeed play a role in such trends. The subtitle for the article claims "Your ancestors' lousy childhoods or excellent adventures might change your personality, bequeathing anxiety or resilience by altering the epigenetic expressions of genes in the brain."

Read the article here, and decide for yourself:
I have used this site several times for my research, and it has yielded some real gems about my family tree. One thing I discovered there is that my great-great grandmother Vermilyea Krismeyer's older brother, Mettis, was married to a woman named Nettie who apparently went "mad" after finding his stashed trunk full of gold. Upon discovering it, she told a neighbor that she "had to go" and took the booty down to New York City for a spending spree. Crazy? Like a fox, I'd say! You go, girl.
May you find a story as interesting as that in your own research.

Grand Aunt Jeanne and me on May 27th, 2012

The beautiful lady sitting to my right in the photo above is my grandaunt, Jeanne Dietz Garrity. She was born in 1928, the oldest of three girls, and was my late grandmother Marilyn Dietz's older sister. An invaluable and enthusiastic source of family history, Aunt Jeanne (as I called her) not only provided names and dates for my great and my great-great grandparents; she elaborated on their lives in ways that brought them to life for me long after their passing.

Earlier this month, Aunt Jeanne went to join them, her two sisters, and her beloved husband, after 84 years of life.

She died on a Saturday. My husband and I had just taken advantage of Long Island Restaurant Week by having a spectacular three-course meal in Sayville. When we returned to the house, my mother met us in the kitchen with a sad face. "Is everything okay?" I asked.

"No," she said. And then she told me.

I feel fortunate to have called and spoken with Aunt Jeanne a few weeks prior. She'd sent me some family documents including her parents' marriage certificate, and upon review I'd noticed that my great grandparents had married in Hoboken, New Jersey. Why, I asked, had they married so far away from their family homes in Brooklyn?

"Oh, they eloped!" she said. Apparently, they'd just found out that Jeanne was on her way.

When I first told her what I'd found out about Mary Cordial, the great-great-great grandmother who'd sparked my genealogy habit, she was stunned. "I'm Irish?" she asked. She'd lived over 80 years without ever hearing this. "I had no idea Grandma Dietz was Irish. She always cooked German food!"

When Aunt Jeanne spoke, there was something in the way she enunciated her words that reminded me of my grandmother's voice. It wasn't an accent so much as an intonation, accompanied by the occasional soft, whistling s. Her tone was calm, gentle. I felt a lot of comfort while listening to her.

I'm so glad I was able to go to the family reunion that my first-cousin-once-removed, also named Jeanne, planned last May. Sitting in the screened-in porch with Aunt Jeanne, I was treated to numerous stories from her youth. The 1940 Census had only just been released the previous month and hadn't yet been indexed, but a researcher who knew the sought-after-family's actual street address might be in luck. "Where did you live in 1940?" I asked, in between tales. "With Grandpa Ernest," she replied, and she gave me the address. I found the family two days later, of course, right where she said they'd be.

That day, she told me how happy she was that I was interested in learning about our family. "I love hearing your stories," I replied. "Anything you want to tell me, please do." She leaned forward in her chair then, grinning. "I love you," she announced. And we laughed.

Marilyn and Jeanne Dietz, 1931, Bear Mountain

As children, Jeanne and Marilyn would walk with Ernest Ewald, their grandfather, to the Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery to plant flowers at the grave of his wife/their grandmother, Lizzie Burger. He survived her by fourteen years, and he felt the sting of her loss every day until he joined her. "Oh, my Lizzie," he would sometimes say aloud, when missing her became too much to bear.

On Sundays, Jeanne and Marilyn went to the Presbyterian church for services in accordance with the wishes of their mother, Ruth. Walking home, they would pass their paternal grandparents' house. One Sunday, their paternal grandmother Jane Bullock Dietz came running out to ask where they'd been. When they told her, she insisted they come with her right away to Catholic mass, because their father Joseph was Catholic and that was where they should be going. Of course, they went right along with her.

Jeanne also remembered being dropped off for babysitting at her Dietz grandparents' house one holiday season. Their Christmas tree was decorated and set up in a special stand that had been handmade by Louis Martin Dietz, the girls' grandfather. Having collected a number of wooden cigar boxes, Louis had repurposed them as components of a dollhouse with tiny hinged doors and shutters on the windows. Jeanne remembered crawling around on her hands and knees under the Christmas tree with Marilyn beside her, opening those little doors and windows, gleefully looking inside to see what might be within.

Jeanne and Marilyn Dietz, early 1940s, Queens, NY

She told me that one day when she and my grandmother were walking to school, a fellow student stopped and offered them a ride in his little blue convertible. He was sixteen and handsome, and although Marilyn didn't want to get in, Jeanne (then fourteen) insisted that they should. After they reached school, Jeanne hoped she might see Gilmore Garrity again later but decided she'd "never be that lucky." When dismissal time came, she went out the front door to find him there, waiting to drive her home.

Later, when Gil was in the service, she went to his base to visit with him. While she made her way up the walkway toward the building where they were supposed to meet, she heard a sudden commotion--men shouting, angry--so she slowed down. Gil came flying out of the front doors then, pushing aside anyone in his way, and ran straight for her. He'd seen her coming and, unable to wait any longer to throw his arms around her, had plowed through the crowd without heed.

She married him in 1946, and, like her Grandpa Ernest, survived him by fourteen years.

When Aunt Jeanne and I last spoke on the phone, she was recovering after a recent hospital stay. She told me how nice everyone there had been, and how thrilled she was with the 54 Get Well cards* she'd received. She was weak, but determined. She noted, darkly, that she was the only one left of her generation, and spoke about how much she missed her parents, sisters and husband. Reminded of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren (seventeen of those, if my memory serves), she became cheerful again. She told me she loved me again, and that she needed to go and take a rest. I told her that I loved her, too.

I am grateful to have known her, and I will miss her. Always.

When a family researcher shakes their family tree, sometimes unexpected ancestors tumble out. That's what happened to me in July 2009, when I searched "Rebecca Elsing Mudge" on Google and was confronted with a screen full of links to witchcraft books and articles.

I read the first one and then, stunned, paced around my home with a hand clapped over my mouth for over five minutes, reeling. My 11th great grandmother Rebecca Elsing, who'd remarried a man named Nathaniel Greensmith after Jarvis Mudge's death, was not only accused of witchcraft; she was tried, convicted and executed for the crime in Hartford, Connecticut, in January of 1662/3 after having made a remarkable confession including having had intimate dealings with the devil himself. Mudge Memorials, the book that catalogues the lineage of the descendants of Jarvis Mudge, said nothing about what had become of Jarvis's only known wife and mother of his two sons, Moses and Micah. Now I knew why.

But then there's that saying about life giving you lemons. I'd done a considerable amount of prior research at LongIslandGenealogy.com, where I'd found a list of various genealogical societies one might join. The one that really caught my eye that fateful day was The Associated Daughters of Early American Witches (ADEAW), a genealogical society for females aged 16+ years who can trace their lineage back to a woman or man who was accused, tried, convicted and/or executed in the American colonies prior to 31 Dec 1699. Now that would be a cool society to join, I'd thought.

There's no need to ask you to guess what I did next.

Membership in the society is by invitation only, which was problematic; I didn't know a single member who might nominate me. So, I took a chance and emailed the society. Thankfully, then Registrar General Dr. Kim Nagy instructed me about how to go about procuring an invitation from the President General Shari Kelley Worrell. A few emails later, I had an application in hand and was ready to apply. I became a member of ADEAW in April 2009. Since then, I've been honored with an appointment as Editor of The Black Swan, the society's national newsletter. I feel blessed to have found such a wonderful group of ladies who share this unique American heritage.

Founded in 1987 by Mrs. Caroline Engle, ADEAW is a small but growing society with a current membership of just under 500 members. The society meets once a year in Washington DC during mid-April. There, the ladies have the opportunity to get acquainted, hear a speaker discuss topics near and dear to their hearts, and honor their ancestors with a lovely closing memorial ceremony.

Are you a woman who has a "witch" in your family tree? If you have New England roots, you just might. Take a look at ADEAW's Approved Ancestors list. If you think you've found one, ADEAW might be the genealogical society for you!Kathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06948479284201815601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-108236099530321868.post-35462682780459944072012-06-18T11:17:00.001-04:002012-11-27T23:05:40.653-05:00A Mercy Killing

Case not exactly closed.

Don't believe everything you read in the paper, they say. Once again, they're right.

My grandaunt Jeanne gave me this newspaper clipping when I saw her at a family reunion on May 27th in Albany, New York. I gasped, as anyone would, when I read it. I'd been to the Burger/Ewald burial plot at Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in 2008. When I took the photograph below of the headstone marking the spot where Caroline Ewald Kuhnle had been buried in 1958, I'd had no idea how she died.

But there was more to the story.

"It was a mercy killing," said Aunt Jeanne. "She had cancer, and she was dying. She asked him to do it because she couldn't stand suffering any more."

That's an important piece of information. Without it, Frank Shannon looks like a cold-blooded killer, a domestic abuser who finally took matters too far, as so many do. With the information, however, a complicated drama begins to form in one's mind.

How did Caroline ask him to do this for her? How long did they discuss this before Frank felt compelled to comply? How badly had Caroline deteriorated that Frank finally agreed that all of the horrors attached to stabbing her to death would be better than allowing her to continue suffering?

There was a lesson for me here about not jumping to conclusions based on newspaper articles.

Have you ever drawn a conclusion based on your research, only to later find out that conclusion was wrong? If so, I'd love to hear about it in the comments section below.Kathhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06948479284201815601noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-108236099530321868.post-36412828304467482402012-06-06T19:18:00.001-04:002012-06-06T19:24:11.822-04:00I'm My Own WHAT?Genealogists and family researchers alike will appreciate the twisted family tree in this song. I've written for EveryDayFiction.com (click here, if you dare), and I pop back into the site frequently to read. The following story made such an impression on me, I couldn't forget it... although I confess that I could not remember the title. Today, I went back and ran various words--dead, headstone, etc.--through the search field until it popped up. Since the story is so beautifully written (like poetry, said one reviewer) and is relevant to the topics covered here, I'll post the link for your reading enjoyment:
Nothing drives me crazier than clicking on a link for a
"Free" genealogy site and then being asked for a credit card in order
to view the results of the "free" search, which is usually so vague
that you're not entirely sure that the information would be of value anyway. Genealogy
is already too expensive a hobby without all these fly-by-night sites trying to
cash in on our curiosity. (Besides, who wants to give credit card information to
strangers over the internet?) So, I've compiled the list below of truly free links
for genealogists.

Family Search
– When I first started researching, the site was
not so great because it was laden with often incorrect, user-provided
information. In the last three years, however, the site has been adding actual
scanned church, census, and other records to its holdings. Now it's the best
free genealogy web site online, hands down. After searching for your relatives
by name, try searching databases by place. Most of the links are free, but some
lead to sites like Fold3 or Ancestry, where you'll have to sign up for a two
week trial period in order to see records. If you're diligent about canceling
in time, go for it!

Olive Tree Genealogy – I'll admit it right up front—I
love OTG because I found my 7th Great Grandfather's 1695 christening
and 1725 marriage record from the Reformed Dutch Church of New Amsterdam there
by happy accident. If you have early American Dutch roots, there's a whole list
of resources for you! OTG also links to genealogical resources for Palatine
Germans, Mennonites, Huguenots, Walloons, Native Americans; ships passenger
lists; Canadian genealogical resources and much more.

Ray's Place New England – Let's hear it for Ray! His site,
which boasts over 7,000 links, offers New England Vital records, cemetery
listings, census records and much more. There are some obscure records for
specific towns listed. If your family goes all the way back to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, you need to take a look at this site.

Before Ellis Island, there was Castle Garden. If
your immigrant ancestor arrived in New York between 1820 and 1913, there's a
real probability that they passed through here on their way to a new life in
America. This free database can be searched by name and years of likely
arrival. Remember to test different name spellings, particularly phonetic ones,
if you have no initial success. My experience tells me that they could be
pretty creative spellers back then.
